Interactive Learning Opportunities
At Alliance for a Living Ocean, we believe education is the foundation of long-term environmental stewardship. Through hands-on learning experiences and community partnerships, we aim to inspire a new generation of ocean advocates.
Critter Round-Ups: Explore Barnegat Bay's Wildlife
ALO’s Critter Round-Ups are free, fun, and family-friendly events held along the shores of Barnegat Bay. Participants join our trained staff and interns to explore the bay’s incredible biodiversity by pulling a seine net through the shallows to discover fish, crabs, shrimp, and more. It's an exciting way to learn about marine ecosystems while fostering a love for the ocean. We handle all creatures gently and release them back into the bay after observation.
These events run every Tuesday and Thursday starting in late June.
School Beach Cleanups
We partner with nearby schools to organize hands-on beach cleanups that combine environmental education with community action. These events teach students about marine debris, sustainability, and the importance of preserving our local ecosystems. By engaging directly with the coastline, students gain a deeper understanding of their connection to the ocean and how their actions can make a real difference.

LBT Marine Field Station
As part of our commitment to community education and environmental stewardship, Alliance for a Living Ocean proudly supports and promotes the programming at the Long Beach Township Marine Field Station in Holgate. This incredible facility serves as a hub for coastal education, offering hands-on learning experiences that deepen understanding of our local marine and estuarine ecosystems.
Throughout the summer, the Field Station hosts family-friendly programs like What’s Happening Wednesdays, Terrapin Tuesdays, and Kids' Corner. These engaging sessions teach environmental principles in fun, memorable ways that inspire children and adults alike to care for our coastal environment.
We believe education is one of the most powerful tools in protecting our natural resources. That’s why we encourage families and young learners to explore everything the LBT Marine Field Station has to offer.
