Mitigating Litter in Surf City: A New Proposal for Covered Trash Receptacles

Surf City is a beautiful and unique part of Long Beach Island, and it’s crucial that we work together to preserve the town’s natural beauty by keeping its beaches clean. Beach litter in Surf City has become an ongoing issue, as documented by residents, visitors, and stakeholders through social media, borough council meetings, and our biannual Beach Sweeps. Volunteers with ALO regularly collect large amounts of trash on the beaches, highlighting the scope of the problem.

While beach litter is a complex issue that won’t be solved overnight, a comprehensive, collaborative effort involving residents, visitors, and local government is essential. One practical step that can significantly improve beach cleanliness is the installation of covered trash receptacles along the shoreline. This simple measure would prevent litter from being scattered by the wind and wildlife, reduce waste overflow, and create a cleaner environment for everyone who enjoys Surf City’s beaches.

ALO has developed a detailed plan to address beach litter and we believe Surf City can make great strides in preserving its beaches by implementing this initiative. We urge the Borough to take action by covering the public trash cans as a key part of a broader effort to maintain a clean, healthy, and welcoming community.

If you agree with this initiative, we encourage you to contact the Borough of Surf City and share your support. You can email the Borough Council directly at boroughclerk@surfcitynj.org to voice your opinion and help us make this important change.
